Artificial Intelligence (AI) has now reached the field of home staging and interior design, offering exciting new possibilities for those who want to quickly and strikingly transform their homes or redesign spaces, buildings, and furniture for clients. There are many dedicated programs for interior design planning, but in my experience, these solutions are often inaccurate, fail to capture the exact dimensions of a space, or only offer generic, boring sample options.
An Example: Home Staging in an Under-Construction Apartment
Recently, I used Leonardo AI to stage an unfinished, unplastered apartment, bringing life into the raw space. With AI-generated concepts, the builder, owner can more easily (and potentially at a higher price) sell the property, as buyers can better visualize their new home, even when electrical wiring and pipes are still exposed. Here, AI was genuinely helpful in creating a unique interior atmosphere.
I received these images from my client, which I transformed:

Step 1: Using Leonardo AI, I first “plastered” the walls to establish the space, making it easier to add the new design elements on top.

Step 2: After uploading the plastered image as a reference, I adjusted the settings and prompts to create the following designs. These images shouldn’t be treated as final layouts; they won’t be as precise as professional plans made in dedicated design software. However, the goal here is not exact interior design, but creative brainstorming – a starting point to explore color schemes or arrangements. For the average buyer, these images can help them imagine their new home more easily.
Redesigning the Dining Room
In the next example, I reimagined my own dining room, experimenting with new wall and furniture styles using Leonardo AI. The AI allowed me to test different materials and colors without incurring the costs and time associated with actual reupholstery. Here, I started with a pre-furnished space and only changed the styles, not the arrangement.
Reimagining Furniture Upholstery with 3D Design
One of Leonardo AI’s most exciting features is the ability to generate for 3D objects. In this example, I uploaded a 3D model of a chair in .obj format and tried out various materials and colors for reupholstering. This tool offers incredible potential if you work with 3D design. Imagine – if I could do this as a complete beginner, think of the possibilities for professionals!
How Can AI Support Your Home Staging and Interior Design Projects?
Whether you’re curious to see how your home might look in an entirely new style or are a professional interested in incorporating AI into your workflow, don’t hesitate to give it a try. Explore Leonardo AI’s free version or test out other AI-based apps. But keep in mind, the machine won’t do all the work for you; human creativity remains essential in design. Here’s how AI can help:
- Visualization Assistance: AI tools quickly and precisely display changes, such as color combinations, furniture placements, or even experimenting with new interior design styles. This is particularly useful in the early planning stages of a renovation or redesign.
- Spatial Awareness and Layout Support: AI takes into account the proportions and dimensions of a space, helping to maintain accurate spatial relationships and measurements.
- Cost-Effective Experimentation: Interior design and home staging often require experimenting with colors, furniture, and layouts to find the best combination. AI allows you to conduct these costly trial-and-error processes digitally, so there’s no need for physical modifications.
- Unique Style and Personalization: With AI, you can preserve your personal preferences and design traits easily. Instead of relying on cookie-cutter solutions, AI provides ideas tailored to your unique style, which can be used as additional inspiration.
- Creating a Cozy, Appealing Space: In home staging, it’s essential to create a welcoming and attractive impression. AI can not only generate new designs but also improve space utilization by suggesting storage solutions you may not have considered.
AI thus doesn’t replace design or creativity; rather, it plays a supportive role in interior design and home staging projects. These tools can save you time and energy, helping ensure that the final result reflects your vision and makes the best impression on every visitor.
